A musicologist, manager, promoter, plenipotentiary of the President of Cracow for culture, artistic director of critically acclaimed music festivals: Misteria Paschalia, Sacrum Profanum, and the Opera Rara cycle.

Each of the events organized by Berkowicz has a distinct character and profile. Misteria Paschalia, taking place during the Holy Week and Easter, presents Renaissance and Baroque music played by the best early music performers from all over the world. Sacrum Profanum is regarded as the most important Polish festival presenting artists from various fields: contemporary and avant-garde music, as well as ambitious pop. Past editions included concerts by: Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Intercontemporain, Klangforum Wien, and, on the other hand, Aphex Twin, Chris Cunningham, and Kraftkwerk. Opera Rara presents the modern face of opera.

“We won’t know how the Medieval music had been performed – my professor used to say – until we find recordings from that era.”

Before joining the Kraków Festival Office and organizing important musical events Berkowicz used to work in the PWM Edition (Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne) and in the Musica Iagellonica label. His thesis had been awarded in a competition held by the Polish Composers’ Union. Berkowicz wrote several dozen entries in the PWM Encyclopedia of Music, many musicological articles, as well as books for general public, including: “Antonio Vivaldi” and “Georg Philipp Telemann”. Participates in the European Culture Congress as a curator of the musical event “Penderecki, Aphex Twin & Greenwood”.
