Innowica: theatre at the edge of the world
25 years ago a group of hippies from Silesia and Warsaw used to gather in the Czarne village, where Andrzej Stasiuk - a nowadays renowned Polish writer – resided in his unique Lemko cabin. Stasiuk had a lama and a donkey which he had bought from a Zoo, wrote books, and, even if unintentionally, created an alternative artistic settlement movement in the Beskids. It is from there that Bolek and Uschi with friends and families set out to find their own piece of land. They decided to stay in Nowica and named their group Nowica 9 after their postal address.
Since four years Innowica – the only really liberated alternative theatre festival has been held in their residence. It is a true natural preserve of independent theatre which in many respects resembles like a native American village – ecologically and mentally free of ties with the city.
