TAKK!
July 29 – September 2, 2011

From late July to early September, Katowice will host a six week, interdisciplinary and interactive culture club at Rondo Sztuki (the Art Roundabout), a platform combining art, design, photography, music, literature, and architecture. The program is divided into two thematic blocks: action and presentation. In each of them, guests from out of town will take a look at Katowice from a fresh, new perspective and propose alternative ways of looking at the city, while artists from Silesia will talk about their fascination with Katowice.

“TAK!” will include numerous micro-festivals and artistic projects. Wzorro, a group of Silesian designers composed of graduates of the Katowice Academy of Fine Arts, will work together with the French design group USIN-e to repair the city. Their joint actions, in which the citizens of Katowice will be invited to participate, will revitalize run-down parts of the city and activate the local community.

Invited artists will take their ideas outside the confines of the gallery and create community events, convincing audiences that contemporary art need not be heavy and hermetic. During the all-day workshops, the city will be marked with temporary signatures/pieces by individual artists.

Rondo Sztuki will host comics workshops. The juxtaposition of two perspectives — internal and external — will serve as a base for a comic book about the lives of the people living in the region. The project will be directed by Michał “Sledź” Śledziński and Jacek Frąś.

“European and Polish Sounds” is a series of musical events featuring interesting European and Polish musical phenomena. The goal of the events is to encourage audiences to explore new sounds and a variety of styles. Modern electronic sounds will mix with folk and regional music concerts. International artists will be accompanied by stylistically-matched Polish groups.

Presidency events will also include a photography exhibition titled “Border,” held by the Katowice Academy of Fine Arts and the Tomáš Baťa University in Zlín (Czech Republic). The exhibition will showcase work created by students during an international project titled “Border.” The project is an attempt at an artistic interpretation of the concept of borders. University students from the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, and Poland will take part in the exhibition.

OFF Festival
Katowice August 5–7, 2011

OFF Festival Katowice 2011 is an international alternative music festival, held annually since 2006.

The Presidency Stage will be one of the four main stages at the OFF Festival 2011, and will be housed in a tent with a capacity of up to 1,500 people, complete with sound equipment, lights, and audiovisual equipment. During the three days of the festival, the Presidency Stage will host performances in a variety of genres by 21 artists from Poland and abroad. Polish Radio 3 will be the media partner of the Presidency Stage.

The goal of all events at the OFF Festival Katowice 2011 is to promote and support alternative art, while presenting the best and most interesting phenomena in new and old alternative music, especially acts that have had a significant influence on the world’s musical culture.

OFF Festival Katowice has grown into a respected international brand. OFF was nominated among the top ten medium-sized European festivals this year, next to such events as Germany’s Melt and Belgium’s Dour. It is the only festival of its type in Central and Eastern Europe, and reaches audiences of all ages thanks to the wide variety of acts featured in each year’s program.
